When Girls Rise - Ending Child Marriage in Malawi
When Girls Rise was a short film commissioned by the organization Rise Up to tell the story of the brilliant and brave women and girls fighting to change the child marriage law from 13 to 18 in Malawi. The story centers around Faith Phiri, Memory Banda and the brave individuals that stood before parliament - telling their stories and demanding that the girls voices be heard. The were successful in changing the law and the story reminds us that the law is an important first step but the hard work is at the community level, dislodging centuries of misogyny and harmful practices against women and girls.
